born in singapore, I began climbing during my ill-fated national service. I fell in love with outdoor sport climbing during my first month-long solo trip – touring the north and south of Thailand.
as a singaporean, I recognise my unique condition of existing in a society where following the path most travelled and conservativeness of ideas are valued. as much as I despise these conventions, my 23 years in the little red dot means they are deeply rooted in my psyche. yet, they are core to my humanity – I am proud of my culture and my roots. I’m motivated to navigate pursuing my passions while acknowledging my identity.
hence, the name of crux & kaya –
crux – the key and decisive part of an issue, or the hardest part of a climb
kaya – a homage to a sweet & creamy malaysian/singaporean jam
currently based in London, I spend my weekends and every free moment touring the wet and damp crags around the UK, or exploring world-renowned Meccas throughout Europe – seeking adventure, community and most importantly, to keep the spark alive.
